Where does coffee come from?

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages. Some claim it is the most widely consumed liquid in the world aside from water. Coffee became more widely accepted from all over the world. It is very common and most wanted drink. Coffee is drunk more than tea. Approximately over 400 billions cups are drinking around the world in one year, means 15000 cups every second.

In the 15th century the origin of coffee was introduced in Yemen. Coffee beans were first exported from Ethiopia to Yemen. Yemeni traders brought Coffee back to their homeland and began to cultivate the bean. Coffee moved from Yemen to Mekka to Egypt and Turkey.

After Yemen, coffee was first introduced in Europe in the island of Malta in the 16th century by Turkish people.

Coffee is produced from the seeds of a small red and sometimes yellow fruit that grows on plants halfway is size between shrub and trees.

Coffee is containing more than 90 different species of flowering plants. Seed of several species are the source of the beverage coffee.

The seeds are called “ beans” in the trade. Coffee beans are widely cultivated in tropical countries in plantations for both local consumption and export to temperate countries. Coffee ranks as one of the the world’s major commodity crops and is the major export product of some countries.

When grown in the tropics coffee is a vigorous bush or small tree easily grown to a height of 3-3.5m. It cannot be grown where there is a winter frost, because the consistency of coffee beans is hot. Coffee plantations are normally situated in the altitude range of 300-2000m around the Equator. The coffee tree will grow fruits after 3-5 years, for about 50-60 years. ( although up to 100 years is possible) The blossom of the coffee is similar to “Jasmine” in color and smell. The fruit takes about nine months to ripen. Worldwide an estimate of 15 billion coffee trees are growing 100,000km of land.

If we talk about the natural environment that coffee grows under the shade. Most coffee is produced on full-sun plantations. After 3 to 4 years the coffee is planted sweetly smelling flowers grown in clusters in the axils of the coffee leaves .

Ethiopia:

In Ethiopia coffee was discovered in 11th century by the shepherd whose name was kaldi. When he saw his goats eating some berries from a tree. His curiosity increased and he told the local monastery about this, So the monastery members came up with the idea of drying and boiling the berries to make a beverage. So they got success in their mission. One of them members he threw the berries into the fire, whence the unmistakable aroma of what we now know coffee. Then roasted beans were raked from the embers ground up and dissolved in hot water, so what we made the world’s first cup of coffee..

After the fame of the coffee plants spread to other lands.

Yemen:

After Ethiopia, coffee quickly spread through the Arabian Peninsula. In the half era of 14th century, coffee cultivation reached Yemen for 300 years, it was drunk following the recipe first used in Ethiopia.

But Yemen was the first proper origin of coffee.

Istanbul:

In 1555,  during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent by Ozdemir Pasha, Istanbul was introduced this beverage (coffee) After some time coffee became a vital part of this place. And also coffee got renowned popularity in the Court of Sultan Suleiman. And after this coffee soon spread from the court to grand mansion and from grand mansion to the homes of the public. The people of Istanbul quickly became enamored with the beverage. The efforts of the merchants coffee spread from Turkey to Europe and then ultimately to the whole world.

Venice:

In 1615, Europeans got their first taste of coffee. When Turkish merchants came in Venice with coffee. At first, the beverage was sold in the streets in Venice, but in 1645 the first Coffeehouse opened in Italy. And after this Coffeehouse sprang up all over the world and coffee became famous more and more.

Paris:

Paris was introduced to coffee in 1669. Like other regions Paris became a platform of coffee. Paris opened first real coffeehouse which name was Cafe de Procope, opened in 1686. This Coffeehouse soon became a favourite haunt by the renowned poets, playwrights, actors, artists, musicians and as well as famous figures. So this trend got more popularity and small and big coffeehouse opened on practically every street in the city.

London:

First time A Turk introduced this drink in Oxford in 1637. It quickly became popular among students and teachers, after some time they established the “Oxford Coffee Club”.

The first Coffeehouse in Oxford opened in 1650 and was called the “Angel”. Thus London became a integral part in the house of coffee. Coffee soon made an important place among the teachers, students, lawyers, politicians and philosophers.

 Holland:

The history of coffee in Holland is markedly highly different from that of other countries, as for many years the Dutch were more concerned with coffee as a trade commodity than as a beverage.

Coffee first time reached in Holland via Yemen in the 17th century. In 1699, coffee beans were planted on the island of Java.

The first Coffeehouse in Holland opened in the 1660s. So Holland introduced their more coffeehouses in other countries with their unique styles, rich decor, a warm atmosphere and lush green gardens.

Germany:

Coffee was introduced to Germany in 1675. The first Coffeehouse opened in 1679-1680 in Hamburg, Bremen, and Hanover.

At first coffee was introduced as a noble drink.  But middle and lower classes were not yet introduced coffee as a drink in the early 18th century. But with the passage of time it became get more popularity in the phase of lower middle. And then they established their own “coffee club”.And now we talk about The plantation of Coffee.

In Botanical theory, Coffee is the family of Rubiaceae. But 3 types of coffee species has been commercialise:

  1. Arabica
  2. Robusta
  3. Liberica.

Liberica:

The primer roots was 0.5-2.0m and secondary roots can be growth 2-3m.The leave bigger than other species and shining. The skin of these leaves are thicker than other species.

Robusta And Arabica:

The primer roots was shorter than liberica.Arabica very fast-growing and strong stem, the leaf formed in spheres and narrow at the end anError! The leaves are broad and crinkled and thinner than liberica.

Leaf:

The leaf was growth with couple of leave at every branch and stem.
Liberica and Arabica leaves are dark green.
Robusta leave is a pale green.
So every varieties have different size of leave.
The bunch of flowers are growth at first 3-4 buds. Every buds contain 1-3 bunch of flowers. Like Liberica 1 bunch of flowers contain 1-4 flowers. And Robusta and Arabica have 3-4 bunch and 2-4 flowers every bunch.
The flowers was formed with the influence duration of light and weather. The flowers are beautiful blooming and white. The stigma are yellows The stigma will turn back after pollination occurred.
The flowers are opened in the early morning. High efficiency of pollination during good weather and sunlight, but in the cloudy weather the pollination will be decreased. The process of pollination will be completed within 24 hours.
If we talk about the Climate then we say that it is a common and important factor for growing plants.
Rainfall and Temperature is the biggest contribution of growth of coffee. Dry season is very important and necessary to form of flowers.
Firstly, the leaf is ripen and then became flower, and then became seeds. So these seeds are roasted and make a coffee.
